Sanada Residence 【National Designated Historic Site】
In 1864, the Sanada Residence was built by the 9th lord of the Matsushiro
Domain, Yukinori Sanada. He built the house for his mother-in-law, Teishouin.
After the Meiji Restoration, it was used as the private residence for the
Sanada family. This is one of the rare and precious buildings in Japan
which was built in the palace architecture style with its characteristic
Japanese garden of the late Edo period. It was designated a National Designated
Historic Site in 1981. The Japanese garden, in the Kyoto style “Suishinshugetsutei”,
treats visitors to the elegance of seasonal colors and scenery of Matsushiro.
